No idea if there is proper terminology for bits of a gunge tank but I'll try to describe what I mean.
Currently the business end of our tank is clear storage box with a 45mm hole drilled out of the bottom, rubber bung in the hole, jobs a goodern. This gives a nice shiny single column of gunge and flows nicely with different thicknesses of gunge. I'm curious to try modifying it for some shoots to see what loads of individual streams of gunge - more like a shower head effect, see what that looks like. Plan A is find a colander with decent sized holes and screw that into the roof of the tank under the column of gunge, or an old bucket with a load of holes drilled in the bottom. Think my main worry is using gunge that's too thick and it not flowing out of the device fast enough that it backs up and overflows - it'll still make a mess but not achieve the visual effect I'm after.
Anyone tried this or a similar technique to get more like a shower head affect with any level of success?
If I remember it correctly the former Bristol producer used to have a kind of grid that could be slid into place below the tank outlet, to difuse the flow. Something like quite fine chicken-wire I think, so more "wire grid in the flow" than "holes in a collander" if that makes sense? This is from memory though, and from a while back.
I'm sat here looking at a plastic celebrations tub and I know I've got some L shaped metal brackets in the garage. I might just take a drill to it and take a punt. What's the worst that could happen? Either that or take a walk around a hardware store. I'd not though of a grid of some sort, might be something like a small plastic drain cover which might do just enough to spread the gunge out.

Celebrations tub with holes sounds like a brilliant idea, as the tub fills the pressure will rise and so the flow from each hole accellerate. And it should be a decent size, certainly much wider than the main tank valve. Perhaps don't put holes, or only a few, in the middle, and more further out, to create a "ring of gunge" effect?
This idea has still been festering at the back of my mind. Found chance to wander round the guttering section of a hardware store one lunch time and think I've found something which could work - a downpipe gutter guard (and a gutter connector to house it in). For less then 6 quid all in it seems worth a punt. Hoping to get a scene shot at the weekend, so I'll probably have a tinker and see what happens.
Made the nozzle at the weekend. Tested it and it didn't really do what I wanted it to - but it wasn't a disaster either. Ended up with a wider column and a couple of off-shoots where it overflowed the nozzle.
Think the gunge was too thick, so plan to try with some thinner stuff at some point.
I think something more round like a colander bowl will help with creating a shower effect. I think I have done it before but my slime was much too fluid and it all just found the path back to the center of the bowl anyway before falling down. Unless if greater force is applied. I think the previous producer mentioned may have also used pumps and that would have forced the substance more quickly through the holes at different angles and then they drop down.
I got loads closer to the effect I was looking for today. Turns out the answer was staring me in the face. I'd upgraded an organiser in the bathroom and was wondering what to do with the old one. I took it apart expecting it would end up being sold cheap on the internet, then started looking at the individual trays, with an array of 12mm-ish holes in (Ikea Vesken). It was soon mounted and ready for a test. Ended up with more like large raindrops than separate constant streams, but it still looked really good in my opinion.
I think WildThang is probably right and what it would need next is greater pressure somehow, but I know I'd stuff something up, end up blowing a hose and repainting everything in the room with gunge. Maybe with different resources a gravity fed system over two stories might do it.
Picture added of CheekyLuna being a willing volunteer, getting gunged with orange gunge whilst collared, gagged, bound and blindfolded, wearing a purple latex bodysuit with a pipe tucked down the front of it. I've had worse evenings... one more for the editing pile.
